My School Unit Project

You are hosting a Chinese exchange student. You take him/her to visit our school. In this project, you will need to create a skit about the hosting experiences. Therefore, you need to work with a partner and decide each other’s role in the skit. One needs to act as a Chinese exchange student and the other as an American student. You need to work in a group of 3 because there is not an even number of students in class, then one student is the CA student an the other 2 are visitors.
Skit 1
You phone your visiting student. Act out the moment when you call him/her and say your phone number aloud
You only know his/her name
Tell him/her who you are and explain why you phone him/her
Find out the following information about the visiting student:
  • Where he/she is from
  • what is the name of the school he/she attends in China?
  • which grade they are attending in their school
  • How they feel about the visit (are they nervous, excited, worried?)
Ask him/her if they have any questions. Your visiting student actually has a few questions for you
  • They want to know which day they have to go to CA
  • They want to know at what time they need to go to CA
  • They want to know where they have to go to meet you
  • They need to know the schedule for the day
Then you say good bye and repeat the day and time you are meeting
Skit 2:
You meet your visiting student at CA
You go with him/her to Chinese class
You introduce him/her to the teacher
You introduce him/her to the class (say his/her name, where they are from and which elementary school he goes to)
You want to know your visiting student a little bit better, so you ask him a few questions about his hobbies, what he likes and if they have siblings, how old are they, what grade they are in...etc.
The visiting student is going to tell you a little about his/her personality, what they like doing, what sports they play
Then you go to the cafeteria
You tell him/her a little bit about the menu and ask him/her what they feel hungry and thirsty for and if they like healthy food.
Skit 3:
You sit at the table in the cafeteria with him/her. It is the end of his/her visit.
You start the conversation talking about the weather. You continue the conversation with a few comments about the food. Then the visiting student asks you where the school store is (商店) and what they sell there. The visiting student continue to ask you where the library is and what time it stays open and close.
Then you ask him/her what he/she thinks about the school.
The visiting student shares his/her impressions and says how he feels about the school.
He says what he really likes about CA and what he does not.
Then he has 2 questions about where different things are located at CA and 2 more generic questions(teachers, activities, daily schedule, things you have to do, anything…).
You tell the visiting student a little bit about your daily schedule at CA.
You tell the visiting students about how you felt about each subject area. (I think math is easy, difficult, fun..etc. )
The visiting student makes one or two comments or questions.
You then say it was a pleasure to spend some time with him/her and say good bye.
Things to remember:
  1. You and your partner need to decide the role each of you is going to take and to work on your skit.
  2. Each of you is going to speak with as much details as possible.
  3. You write down your skits in Chinese. Typing is allowed, however, you need to put Pinyin above the characters that you are not familiar with. You can also try to handwrite and use a combination of characters and Pinyin. I recommend that you seek assistance for unfamiliar characters.
  4. You review the skits together to check for accuracy.
  5. During the presentation, you will not be able to read your script.
  6. Remember to take a courtesy bow to the audience when you finish the prese
